Section 01
Why Schengen Appointment Slots Are So Hard to Get in Nigeria
Nigeria has over 220 million people. A rapidly growing middle class and the "Japa" emigration wave have driven Schengen visa applications to record levels — while embassy capacity has not kept pace. The result is a structural shortage of appointment slots, particularly in Lagos which handles the bulk of applications.
High demand relative to capacity
VFS Global Lagos and TLScontact handle applications for multiple Schengen countries simultaneously with limited biometric capture booths.
Seasonal spikes
Slots for summer travel (June–August) fill in January–March. Christmas travel slots fill in September–October. Planning a year ahead is no longer unusual.
Slot hoarding and cancellation patterns
Some applicants book slots "just in case" and cancel — but cancellations are unpredictable and fill immediately. No practical way to exploit this pattern.
Online booking systems release slots irregularly
VFS and TLScontact release new slots in batches, often at non-standard times. Without monitoring the system actively, you miss them.
Important: You can only book an appointment after you have received a written acknowledgement or are ready to submit — do not book a slot months in advance without complete documents. Arriving at your appointment without a full document package will result in your application being rejected at the counter.

Visa Application Centres (VACs) in Nigeria
Two companies operate the majority of Schengen visa application centres in Nigeria: VFS Global and TLScontact. Each handles specific countries:
VFS Global Nigeria
Lagos
Plot 1677, Oyin Jolayemi Street, Victoria Island, Lagos
Mon–Fri, 8:00am–3:00pm
Abuja
Plot 773, Ralph Shodeinde Street, Central Business District, Abuja
Mon–Fri, 8:00am–3:00pm
Booking portal: nigeria.vfsglobal.com
TLScontact Nigeria
Lagos
10B Ligali Ayorinde Street, Victoria Island, Lagos
Mon–Fri, 8:30am–2:30pm
Abuja
Plot 1267, Ahmadu Bello Way, Area 11, Garki, Abuja
Mon–Fri, 8:30am–2:30pm
Booking portal: nigeria.tlscontact.com/fr
Lagos vs Abuja: Lagos consistently has more appointment slots available due to higher staffing capacity. If you live in northern Nigeria, Abuja is closer — but if both centres are roughly accessible, check Lagos first as more slots are released there.

How to Book a Schengen Visa Appointment — Step by Step
Identify your embassy and the correct VAC
Determine which Schengen country you are primarily visiting and confirm whether they use VFS or TLScontact. Applying at the wrong centre means your documents will be turned away.
Create an account on the booking portal
Register at the correct portal (VFS Global Nigeria or TLScontact Nigeria). Use a valid email address you monitor actively — appointment confirmations, reminders, and any status changes go to this email.
Select visa category and applicant details
Choose "Schengen Visa" then your destination country, then "Short Stay Tourist Visa" (or Business, Student as appropriate). Enter passport details exactly as they appear on your passport — a mismatch causes rejection at the counter.
Search for available dates
The calendar shows available appointment slots. If no slots are visible, the system will show "no appointments available" — do not assume the VAC is closed. New slots appear regularly. Check back frequently.
Select your preferred date and time, then confirm
Slots are held for a limited time (typically 10–15 minutes) while you complete the booking form. Complete payment before the hold expires or the slot returns to the pool.
Pay the VAC service fee
VFS and TLScontact charge a separate service fee (approximately ₦15,000–₦25,000 depending on country) in addition to the government visa fee. Pay by card — cash is not accepted at the online booking stage.
Save your appointment confirmation
You receive an email confirmation with a reference number and appointment barcode. Print this or save it on your phone — you cannot enter the VAC without it.
Section 04
How to Find Available Appointment Slots Faster
When the calendar shows no slots, most applicants give up and check again weekly. The applicants who consistently get slots earlier do the following:
Check early morning and late evening
VFS releases new slots in batches, typically between 6:00am–8:00am and after 8:00pm. Cancellation slots (from applicants rescheduling) also appear throughout the day but are rarest in the middle of the day.
Check both Lagos and Abuja
Most applicants only check one city. If Abuja has slots available when Lagos does not, travelling to Abuja for the appointment is often faster than waiting weeks in Lagos.
Check immediately after school holidays start
Applicants who booked around Nigerian public holidays or school holidays sometimes cancel when plans change. A wave of cancellation slots often appears in the week after a holiday period ends.
Consider applying through a licensed visa service
Licensed agents operating at volume sometimes have access to appointment booking systems before general availability, or have existing relationships with VAC staff that enable faster bookings. This is one of the most reliable ways to avoid weeks of manual slot-hunting.
Consider alternative countries with shorter queues
If your Schengen itinerary is flexible, check whether the embassy for your secondary destination has shorter waiting times. Greece and Portugal VAC queues are often shorter than Spain or France in Lagos.
Section 05
What to Bring to Your Appointment
Arriving at the VAC with incomplete documents is one of the most common and costly mistakes. The staff will not complete your submission — you will be turned away and must book another appointment while your slot is lost. Prepare this checklist the night before:
Appointment confirmation
Printed or on your phone — you cannot enter without it
Original passport
Plus copies of the bio data page and all previous visa stamps
Completed application form
Printed and signed — most embassies require a physical wet signature
Two passport photographs
White background, meeting the specific embassy's photo requirements
Bank statements (certified)
Bank-stamped on every page — printed downloads not accepted
Flight itinerary
Confirmed or held booking — must show departure and return
Hotel/accommodation proof
Booking confirmation or host invitation letter
Employment letter
On company letterhead, signed, with leave approval dates
Travel insurance certificate
Minimum €30,000 coverage, covering full trip duration
VAC service fee receipt
Payment confirmation from your online booking
Section 06
Rescheduling and Cancellations
Can I reschedule my appointment?
Yes, through the same booking portal. Log in to your account, find your existing appointment, and select "Reschedule." Availability is subject to slots — you may not find a slot close to your original date. The VAC service fee is typically non-refundable but applied to the rescheduled appointment.
What if I need to cancel entirely?
Cancel via the portal before your appointment. The VAC service fee is generally non-refundable. The government visa fee is only lost if you have already submitted your documents and paid — cancelling before submission means you have not paid the embassy fee yet.
What if I miss my appointment?
A missed appointment is treated as a cancellation. You must book a new appointment — typically at the back of the queue. The VAC service fee is not refunded. If this happens close to your travel date, contact the VAC directly to explain and request an emergency slot.
How far in advance can I book?
VFS and TLScontact typically open the booking window 12 weeks in advance. However, because slots fill immediately, most applicants can only book 4–8 weeks out in practice. Plan your travel date accordingly — never book non-refundable flights before securing an appointment.

Don't risk rejection after getting your slot
Securing a VFS appointment is only step one. A professionally prepared application is what turns that slot into a Schengen stamp. SwiftPass has a 95%+ approval rate across all 29 Schengen countries — and guarantees refund if we make an error.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to pay the visa fee before booking an appointment?
For most Schengen countries, you pay the government visa fee at the VAC on the day of your appointment (or sometimes online in advance depending on the embassy). The VAC service fee is paid when you book the appointment online. Check your specific embassy's instructions.
Can someone else attend the VAC on my behalf?
No. Biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) must be collected in person. You must attend the appointment yourself — no proxy submissions are accepted for Schengen visa applications.
My appointment is in 2 weeks but my documents are not ready. What should I do?
If you cannot prepare complete documents in time, reschedule your appointment to a later date immediately. Arriving with incomplete documents wastes your appointment and forces you to book another slot at the back of the queue. Only attend when fully prepared.
Is there a faster way to get a Schengen appointment if I have an urgent situation?
Most embassies have a provision for urgent or emergency Schengen appointments for documented emergencies (medical treatment, family bereavement, time-sensitive business). Contact the embassy directly — not the VAC — with evidence of the urgent situation. These are evaluated case by case.
What is the difference between a VAC appointment and an embassy appointment?
For most Schengen countries, you submit your application at the Visa Application Centre (VFS or TLScontact) — not at the embassy itself. The VAC collects your documents and biometrics and forwards everything to the consular section. You do not need a separate embassy appointment unless specifically instructed.
