What the NZeTA actually is

The New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) is a digital entry permit, similar to the US ESTA, that lets passport holders of visa-waiver countriesvisit New Zealand without applying for a full visitor visa. It's filed online, approved within minutes-to-hours, and costs around NZD $23 via the official app(NZD $52 if you file through Immigration NZ's website).

The NZeTA is fast, cheap, and convenient — but it's gated. Only specific nationalities can use it.

Who is eligible for the NZeTA

Immigration New Zealand publishes the list of NZeTA-eligible nationalities. The list includes the United States, United Kingdom, every European Union member state, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Brazil, Mexico, Hong Kong, Macau, and roughly 60 countries in total. It also covers permanent residents of Australia.

Nigerian, Ghanaian, Kenyan, and South African passports are not on the list. Neither are most other African passports. There is no "NZeTA for Africa" — even though Google's search results are full of third-party vendors implying otherwise.

Why these sites still pop up in Google

Three reasons. One:high-traffic generic visa vendors (iVisa, Atlys, Sherpa, VisaHQ, ivisatravel, nzeta-visa.org, nzetapermit.com, etc.) write generic "Country X NZeTA guide" pages because the keyword has search volume — even when the country isn't eligible. Two:some bad-faith operators sell what they describe as "NZeTA" but is in fact just form-filling help for the full Visitor Visa, with a markup. They use the misleading name on purpose, because that's what people Google. Three:Immigration New Zealand's own list isn't always easy to find on their site — third-party SEO outranks the official answer.

If you've already paid one of these sites "for an NZeTA" on a Nigerian / Ghanaian / Kenyan / SA passport, one of two things will happen: either they file an actual Visitor Visa with INZ and you paid them a fat markup over the real $246 INZ fee, or your NZeTA submission gets rejected by INZ and you lose the fee entirely.

The correct pathway for an African passport holder visiting New Zealand on tourism, business, family visit, or short-term conference is the INZ Visitor Visa, filed online. Key facts:

• Filed online— no in-person embassy visit. There is no NZ embassy in Nigeria, Ghana, or Kenya, and you don't need one. The INZ portal accepts your application from anywhere.
• No biometrics for standard short-stay Visitor Visas (biometrics are required for longer-term work and residence applications).
• Government fee NZD $246 (~$152 USD) paid directly to Immigration NZ.
• International Visitor Levy (IVL) NZD $100 added on top by NZ government — many guides leave this out.
• 9 months of stay, multi-entry within 18 months on a standard Visitor Visa.
• Decision time 25–35 business days standard, sometimes faster for South African applicants.

Common Africa-to-NZ questions

I already paid a website for "NZeTA from Nigeria". What now?

Two possibilities. (a) They actually filed a Visitor Visa on your behalf and just used misleading branding — check your INZ account for an "NRV" (Visitor Visa) application reference. (b) They submitted an actual NZeTA application that will be rejected for nationality ineligibility — in which case your fee is gone and you need to start over with a Visitor Visa. Either way, the correct next step is filing the proper Visitor Visa.

Is a Visitor Visa harder to get than an NZeTA?

For someone who would qualify for NZeTA — slightly harder, yes. For Africans, this is moot because NZeTA isn't an option. The Visitor Visa is your pathway, and the document requirements are reasonable for genuine travelers: a valid passport, proof of funds (NZD $1,000/month minimum), return ticket, accommodation plan, and clear travel purpose.

Will NZeTA ever be opened to African passports?

Immigration policy changes are political and slow. New Zealand has not signalled plans to add African nationalities to the visa-waiver list, and the historical trend has been the opposite — tightening rather than loosening visa-waiver eligibility globally. Can I get a Transit NZeTA if I'm just laying over in Auckland on my way somewhere else?

Yes — transit through Auckland International Airport on the way to a third country falls under a different rule.
